About Mixu, the site at mixu.cam

Mixu is a website where two adults meet on a private video call. You open mixu.cam in a browser. A match is found, a face appears, and you talk. That is the product, more or less in full.

We wrote this page for people who like to know what they are using before they use it. It covers why the site exists, the decisions behind it, what was left out on purpose, the sort of people you can expect on the other end, plus the promises we make and the ones we refuse to make.

Because meeting someone new online has become oddly slow. You build a profile, choose photos, answer prompts, swipe, wait, text for days, and quite often never hear the other person's voice. A lot of effort goes into everything except the conversation.

Our view is simpler. Two people find out whether they get along by talking. So everything on the site is laid out to bring you to that point fast, then step aside once the two of you are talking. The format is described on the 1v1 video chat page; the short version is that a conversation for two has no audience to perform for.

There is a second reason, and it is about evenings. Most calling tools assume you already have someone to call. Plenty of people do not, at least not at eleven at night. Mixu is built for that hour: you feel like talking, and somebody else who feels like talking is online too.

Five of them. Each one closes off something we could have built, and each was chosen with that cost in mind.

A swipe deck, an interest quiz and group rooms. There is no stack of profile cards to sort before you may speak to anyone. There is no questionnaire and no algorithm promising a soulmate. There are no rooms with a dozen cameras and a scrolling wall of text.

None of these are bad ideas. They are different products. Cards and quizzes are good at filtering, and filtering is exactly the step we wanted to shorten. Group rooms are good for background company, and less good for getting to know one person. Leaving them out keeps the site small enough to explain in a paragraph.

We mention all this because some visitors arrive expecting those features. If one of them is what you were after, better to know now than after ten minutes of looking for a button that does not exist.

Real people from many countries, one at a time. Browse the online list for a minute and you will see faces from the Americas, Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia on the same screen. Each has a name, a country and photos on their profile.

Different countries means different languages and different clocks. Someone who answers your late-night call may be having breakfast. When there is no common language between you, typed messages can be run through the translate button, and a surprising amount gets across with a smile and a few shared words.

Everyone must be an adult. Conduct rules are short, and they are written out in the community guidelines.

Through coins. Live video costs money to run, and coins are how the people who use the site most cover it. Mixu is free to start, but nobody here will tell you it remains free at any level of use, since that would be untrue. Every part of the arrangement is set out on Is Mixu free.

That every stranger will be kind, that a particular person will be online when you want them, or that nobody ever screenshots a call from their own device. No honest service can promise those things, and saying it plainly on this page beats hiding it in small print.

What we can do is put the exits where you can reach them and tell you how to use them. You can leave any call, block any person and report anything that breaks the rules. The safety tips are split into three stages, getting ready, the call itself and the minutes after you hang up, and what the site stores about you is listed in the privacy policy.

In plain words, and without numbers we cannot stand behind. You will not find a count of free matches, a waiting time in minutes or a claim about how fast a call connects on these pages. Those things change with the hour and with settings we adjust, and a figure that was true on the day it was written tends to be wrong a month later.

Each page on the site answers one question. Pricing lives on one page, accounts on another, safety on a third. When a topic belongs elsewhere we link to it instead of repeating it, so you never have to compare two versions of the same answer.
